“Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich”?

This weekend I finished reading The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich by Timothy Ferris. It was an interesting read and really inspired me to cut the clutter in my daily schedule and prioritize my time for the better. As for its “New Rich” characters, I have worked too many entry-level jobs to take what I have for granted and risk everything for a few frequent flier miles. A 4-Hour Workweek sounds boring to me anyway. The 4-Hour Workweek might be worth it for me if I could spend all of my time with my cat and dog, but I can’t really see them getting past border patrol at O’Hare.

This was a fun book, but I scanned through most of it. It is simply too long (297 pages!) to live up to its title. However, the book offers up a lot of helpful links (also found on book’s site):

Imagine yourself cruising the clouds at 130 m.p.h. while staffing the reference desk in the library of the world’s first luxury air hotel… French designer Jean-Marie Massaud is bringing this dream to life! His Manned Cloud airship hotel will accommodate 40 guests (+15 staff members) and as Massaud puts it: “permits man to explore the world without a trace: to re-experience travelling, timelessness and enhance the consciousness of the beauty of the world.” The air hotel will feature a bar, sun deck, restaurant, 20 rooms, and best of all, a library (or would it be called a “flibrary”?)! The airship will begin construction soon and is under development with ONERA, the National Aeronautics Research Center of France. Recycling your Electronics

This month’s issue of National Geographic has a spectacular article on high-tech trash and its devastating effect on the global environment and developing nations (High-Tech Trash: Will your discarded TV or computer end up in a ditch in Ghana? by Chris Carroll, Jan. 2008). Unfortunately, the U.S. is to blame for much of the world’s tech waste and its low rate of recycling.

Fortunately, all of us can do our part to keep our own unwanted electronics out of landfills and reassembled into new gadgets. The EPA hosts and informative site on eCycling that lists the hazardous components of TVs, PCs, and cell phones, as well as how you can donate or recycle your unwanted electronics. Call2Recycle is a movement hosted by the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation to recycle used batteries and cell phones. The National Cristina Foundation donates unwanted computers to schools, charities, and public agencies, while also supplementing the equipment with technology training. Last but certainly not least, many libraries serve as donation centers for used cell phones, which are then recycled or refurbished: Wireless…The New Recyclable.

U.S. News & World Report recently published a feature story entitled: “50 Ways to Improve Your Life” (Dec. 31 2007-Jan. 7, 2008 issue). Number 17 on the list advised everyone to “get (and use) a library card.”

It’s a small bit of the article, but any publicity is good publicity. In addition, #11 on the list was “Find a Book Worth Talking About.” What a great idea!

So be sure to update your reading list for 2008, join an online book discussion, form a book club, and of course keep visiting your local library…Who knows what wonderful library experiences are in your future this year?
